Rosie I think the upgraded items are a good idea.
But would suggest to add more fun to it. since it cost too much gems.
Like maybe special poses to tops and pants ,it would make it more desirable for us to upgrade and less sad to lose all those gems for one item😅

Rosie, how can you justify the amount of gems we have to use to upgrade one top? The black top you need to use 696 gems in total to fully upgrade! Outrageous ;( I am not going to do any upgrades, waste of gems.
